Celebrating CORE Education Trust’s CORE value of Excellence, students from Rockwood Academy visited the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on Wednesday 19th September to see the production of Tartuffe.
The theatre trip was awarded to Rockwood Academy students for their outstanding efforts and achievements in and out of lessons. The lucky few who were invited were treated to the modern adaption of French playwright Molière’s comedy Tartuffe, taking the play from 17th century France to 21st century Birmingham.
This modern adaption of Tartuffe was brought into 2018 by BAFTA and Emmy-award winning writers Anil Gupta and Richard Pinto (The Office, The Kumars at No. 42, Goodness Gracious Me) and directed by Iqbal Khan (Othello). The cast includes Asif Khan (A Passage To India, Spooks), Simon Nagra (Doctors, EastEnders), Sasha Behar (Coronation Street, Holby City), and Michelle Bonnard (A Midsummers Night’s Dream, The Fear) among others.
The adaption centres around a Pakistani Muslim family who welcome in the charismatic and devout Tartuffe into their home. It’s a story of betrayal, identity, manipulation and gender politics brought together satirically.
The students had a brilliant time celebrating their excellent achievements whilst watching the play.
